Bus 174 (Portuguese Ônibus 174) is the debut film of director José Padilha and co-director Felipe Lacerda. On June 12, 2000 the 174 bus was hijacked in Rio de Janeiro. Sandro do Nascimento, a young man of the underworld, through with passengers of the bus hostage for four hours. The event was captured live on television. The movie examines the incident and what life is like in the slums and favelas of Rio de Janeiro and the way the criminal justice system in Brazil treats the lower classes.
Directed by José Padilha, cleverly takes us through four hours of confrontation and, more impressive, the circumstances that may have incited Nascimento to have an outbreak of pressure. Bus 174''is''a social essay through abduction scenes taken from television, photographs, reams of police reports and psychiatric evaluations, interviews siege negotiator enn of hostages, journalists, cameramen, prison guards, academics, thugs, surviving hostages, Nascimento's social worker, aunt, and his old friends. What you get is an indictment of a society where an inclination to violence is what power they have in common with power.
